Alonzo M. Hannaford

Alonzo M. Hannaford was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on July 1, 1842 and resided in Peterborough New Hampshire. He enlisted in the United States Navy as a youth of 15 and served on the frigate Independence until 1861, when he enlisted in the army. Alonzo enlisted on April 26, 1861 for three months, but was not mustered in. He reenlisted on May 15, 1861 for three years and was mustered in as a Private into Company G of the Second Regiment New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry on June 5, 1861. He was wounded at Williamsburg on May 5, 1862 and was severely wounded July 2, 1863 at Gettysburg during the Peach Orchard engagement. Alonzo was promoted to Sergeant September 1, 1863. He participated in 27 battles and 12 skirmishes and was mustered out at Concord, New Hampshire June 21, 1864. In the same year, as a civilian, he entered the quartermaster's department, where he remained until May 18, 1865. After the war, he became a railroad engineer and resided in Roodhouse, Illinois. He was Commander of Grand Army of the Republic Jacob Fry Post #193 in Roodhouse, Illinois. He married Mary Swan in 1868 and was the father of 12 children. Sergeant Hannaford died on Sunday May 26, 1912 and was buried in the Fernwood Cemetery in Roodhouse, Illinois.
