History
The J. Q. Wilds Camp honors Lt. Colonel John Q. Wilds of Mount Vernon, Iowa, who was wounded while leading his command, the 24th Iowa Infantry Regiment, during the battle of Wilson's Creek, Virginia, on October 19th, 1864. He died one month later.
Regarding the preservation of historic Iowa Battleflags:
"It is the sincere interest of the John Q. Wilds camp, and the national
organization of the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, to see these tangible links to IowaÕs Civil War heritage preserved for future generations.
It is important for the people of Iowa to see and to contemplate these flags and to remember the 76,000 Iowans who responded to the calls of President
Lincoln and Governor Kirkwood to fill nearly fifty regiments to preserve the Union and to banish, forever, the scourge of human slavery from our
continent."
