We welcome the brothers and sisters of the Allied Orders of the Grand Army of the Republic to Overland Park, Kansas.  This is the first SUVCW National Encampment to ever be held in Kansas.  The encampment is being held in Overland Park in the heart of a rapidly growing area of the Kansas City metropolitan area.

 

From the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854, through the years of “Bleeding Kansas” and its border wars from 1855 to 1861, through the Civil War, and in the post-war Western expansion when Kansas would become known as the “Soldier State,” Kansas has been synonymous with the Civil War.

 

Kansas was the home of one Grand Army of the Republic Commander-in-Chief and two Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Commanders-in-Chief.

The host hotel is the Overland Park Marriott Hotel.  This facility was totally renovated in 2008 and 2009.  Room rates are $99.00 per night.  You may make reservations by phone at (800)228-2100 or online at Overland Park Marriott Encampment Reservations.  If you call the “800” number, be sure to specify you want the “SONS OF UNION VETERANS” rate of $99.00 per night.  For “on-line” reservations, make sure the “Group Code” contains ” suvsuva” as the code.  This special room rate is available for the period from August 8 through August 17, so come early and stay late!  In order to guarantee this rate -

“BLEEDING KANSAS” SESQUICENTENNIAL COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL

A special “Bleeding Kansas” Commemorative Medal has been prepared to commemorate the 2010 Encampment.  Before Harpers Ferry, there was “Bleeding Kansas.”  John Brown and his sons were actively involved in the Kansas “Free State” movement.  At what has been referred to as the “first battle of the Civil War,” Brown and is group of followers engaged in armed conflict with Missouri “slave-state” forces at the Battle of Black Jack on June 2, 1856.  It was here that John Brown and then Lieutenant J.E.B. Stuart first came in contact with each other.  They would meet again at Harpers Ferry in 1859.  The Kansas State Historical Society maintains the Adair Cabin in Osawatomie, where John Brown maintained his headquarters.  Use the “Bleeding Kansas” Sesquicentennial Commemorative Medal Order Form to reserve yours, now. 

There will only be 300 medals struck, so order early.  Medal numbers will be assigned in the order of receipt of the order form with payment in full.  Medals may be picked up at the National Encampment.  Any commemorative medals which are not picked up in person will be mailed immediately after the encampment ends.

COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL ORDERS WILL BE ACCEPTED UNTIL ALL MEDALS HAVE BEEN SOLD.

The pre-registration fee is $7.00 before July 22, 2010.    Use the Pre-Registration Form to register.  After July 22, 2010, the registration cost is $10.00.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES

 

Thursday, August 12, 2010 – Noon to 5 PM – Tour of World War I Museum.  This is the only official memorial to the “Great War” that we know as World War I.  We will run one bus if we receive between 40 and 55 reservations.  We will add a second bus if we receive at least 80 reservations.  Reservations will be cut off at 100.  Use the Tour Reservation Form to hold your spot.

Friday, August 13, 2010 – 7 PM – Annual Campfire and Courtesy Hour

 

Saturday, August 14, 2010 – 7:00 AM: Sons of Veterans Reserve Breakfast:  Hosted by the Commanding General, the breakfast is open to all Brothers.  The Sons of Veterans Reserve (SVR) breakfast will take place in the Marriott Hotel at the 129th National Encampment of the SUVCW in Overland Park, Kansas.  The cost of the breakfast will be $15.00 per person, ADVANCE RESERVATIONS AND PAYMENT REQUIRED.  NO AT THE DOOR SALES WILL BE MADE.  For purposes of making final arrangements with the catering service at the Marriott Hotel, it is critically important that reservations from those planning to attend be secured as soon as possible.  Please let Colonel Donald E. Darby, Adjutant General, Sons of Veterans Reserve, know of your planned attendance by using the SVR Breakfast Reservation Form.  Uniforms are encouraged, and wives, children and friends are welcome to attend.
