2008 NATIONAL ENCAMPMENT OF THE ALLIED ORDERS OF THE GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC

AUGUST 7 – 10, 2008

 

The Boston Marriott Peabody will be the venue for the 2008 National Encampment of the Allied Orders. Situated on Boston ’s North Shore , the Boston Marriott Peabody is close to famous historic sites, fine restaurants, world class shopping and great entertainment. These include: Downtown Boston , with its Freedom Trail of Revolutionary War sites and the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library; Salem , America ’s Witch City ; and Lexington and Concord ’s Minuteman National Historic Park . The North Shore Mall, Liberty Tree Mall, and Burlington Mall are nearby the hotel, and Boston ’s famous Newbury Street shopping area is just 30 minutes away. AIRPORT TRANSFERS

Those flying into Boston can take the Logan Express to Peabody , (1-800-23-LOGAN) leaving Logan Airport at 15 minutes past the hour, every hour. A complementary shuttle will be available to take passengers from the Logan Express Terminal in Peabody to the hotel. The Shuttle will be provided by the Host Committee. For shuttle reservations, please call ahead - 617-678-6003.

 

PRE-REGISTRATION

Pre-register at $7 per Brother, using the form provided. The fee helps defray the cost of your 2008 Encampment souvenir medal, Thursday’s Memorial Service at Mount Auburn Cemetery , Friday evening’s Campfire program with entertainment and Saturday evening’s. hospitality room(s). Registration after July 22 nd, 2008 will be $10.

 

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES

Thursday, Aug. 7th – 12 Noon to 5:00 PM: Trolley Tour of the Freedom Trail and Guided Tour of the Massachusetts State House (includes Memorial Service) Sites include Bunker Hill, the Old North Church, Faneuil Hall, and more. Guided tour of the Massachusetts State House, with its many Civil War sculptures, murals and memorial halls.

Thursday, Aug. 7th – 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM : Memorial Service at Mount Auburn Cemetery – Our Encampment Memorial Service will be held in a gothic mini-cathedral in the country’s first garden cemetery, (established in 1831). Some of America ’s most famous soldiers, politicians, writers, poets, artists and inventors are interred at Mount Auburn Cemetery .

Friday, Aug. 8 th – 7:00 PM: Annual Campfire and Courtesy Hour – Speeches, greetings and entertainment, followed by friendly roasts, skits and gifts to honor the Commander-in-Chief and Auxiliary National President.

Saturday, Aug 9th - 7:00 AM : Sons of Veterans Reserve Breakfast— Hosted by the Commanding General, the breakfast buffet is open to all Brothers. The Sons of Veterans Reserve (SVR) breakfast will take place in the Boston Marriott Peabody Hotel at the 127th National Encampment of the SUVCW in Boston, Massachusetts. The cost of the breakfast will be $10.00 per person with advance reservations and $15.00 per person after the final reservation deadline of 01 August 2008 and at the door. For purposes of making final arrangements with the catering service at the Boston Marriott Peabody Hotel, it is critically important that reservations from those planning to attend be secured as soon as possible. Please let Lt. Colonel Donald E. Darby, Adjutant General, Sons of Veterans Reserve know of your planned attendance by using the SVR Breakfast Form. Uniforms are encouraged and wives, children and friends are welcome to attend.

Saturday, Aug 9th – 6:00 PM : Allied Orders Banquet Formal Evening meal and entertainment. Three entrée choices available.
